Dutch government gamifies job hunt

An organization of the government (UWV) that takes care of unemployed people recently launched a job interview game. This organization wants to reach out to youngsters with a low and medium education, because this is the group with the highest unemployment rate.

With the job interview game the government wants to improve 5 skills. Every skill consists of a ‘fun game’ that motivates the player to go on playing. After a while this turns into a serious game with concrete targets: the set-up of a CV, writing a business network plan or making a personal list with tips and tricks to find a job.

The organization found out that over 90% of the unemployed under the age of 30 play games regularly. A lot of these youngsters have a false start when they start working, because they don’t know what they are capable of, or what they want. Besides this, they don’t have the skills or knowledge which is needed to accomplish a successful job interview. The job interview game (Expeditie Work) tries to reach people in a way that suits their perception.

Goal is to stop the increasing unemployment numbers amongst these youngsters.

Unfortunately the game is very poorly designed. It is a very good example how not to design a game.

  2. I agree. Good initiative, not done properly. Do not like to see gamification projects fail.
